Richter's Hernia
Hernia surgery clover

A Richcter's hernia occurs when only part of the side of the bowel wall gets caught in a defect.  It is named after August Gottlieb Richter who described this type of hernia in 1785.

They tend to occur when the hole is small, typically a femoral or inguinal hernia and mostly occur in older patients. The bowel may not be blocked  as only the side wall is caught but strangulation is common due to the small hole.

Resection and anastomosis of the affected small bowel is often needed and is best done at open surgery.

A Richcter's hernia involving the edge of the bowel. The hernia was strangulated and required resection and a bowel anastomosis.
