The Lichtenstein repair or subtle modifications of this operation have become the most popular repair of inguinal hernia. It is used for both direct and indirect hernia.

It is an open operation with a 10 cm skin incision done just above the groin crease. The mesh repairs the weak herniated area and places no tension on the surrounding tissue.

Done well, this is a beautiful anatomical operation and has very good long term results. Recovery is not quite as quick as the keyhole operation but is similar. It can be done under local anaesthetic and as day surgery.
