Anaesthesia

Anaesthesia in 2023 is safe - in skilled hands. Just about anyone can have an elective hernia repair safely. This can be a regional type of anaesthetic with a spinal or epidural while you remain awake with only light sedation or a full general anaesthetic.

It may be possible to repair your hernia with infiltration of local anaesthetic alone.

This may sound rather scary but it is very safe and effective and almost pain free.

Laparoscopic or keyhole surgery can only be done under a general anaesthetic. So this may exclude some patients where regional anaesthetic would be a better choice.

Ventral or incisional hernia will usually need a general anaesthetic.
